Whether you’re just starting on your musical journey or have been doing it for a while, it can be very hard to know where to start to expand your following! This article has 6 different ways to help kickstart your music career and get your music out there!
A really good way to get you and your music out there is to start posting on social media. I am talking about all types of platforms, Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, you name it. Having a solid social media presence means more people will interact with you, spreading your music and increasing your fan base. Did you know artists like BENEE, Lil Nas X, and Doja Cat were boosted to stardom on the app Tik Tok? If you’re not posting regularly on social media, take this as a sign to start!
TIP: Remember to name all your different social media accounts the same thing e.g voyagercompetitions, so if someone finds you on Facebook first, they’ll be able to easily find you on other platforms!
As an artist and musician, you are essentially a brand. How you act, talk, and sing, becomes what people know you as and what creates your image. It is really important to brand yourself professionally but also personable. Think about it, you don’t only love your favorite singer because of their music, you also love watching interviews of them because you get to see them being normal people and their real personalities. You have to think about how you want to be perceived. Are you the classic rock chick with the dazzling pink hair or are you the charming country singer who sings about his home town? Although you never have to fit into one stereotypical box (unique is best!), its best to find the thing that’ll set you apart from everyone else. Being yourself is the best way to create a brand!
As we’ve discussed above, social media is a really important tool when branding your music and yourself. With that being said, this only helps when you’re active and consistent when posting! If you only post once every 3 weeks, your posts are less likely to be seen; therefore people are less likely to interact with them. 3-4 times a week is a great way to start if you want to create a strong online presence. Make all your pages and sites vibrant, and you’ll be sure to stand out!
TIP: Remember to include your audience in your posts, such as asking them questions about songs they’d like to hear or questions they’d like to ask you. This makes your audience and fans feel like you are invested in growing a relationship with them!
Anyone who has been in the Music Industry for a while knows just how important networking is for you and your music. Australia has such a vibrant and active music culture that it is important to make yourself known to as many people as you can. A great way to start networking can be online! Facebook has numerous pages that include an amazing network of music industry professionals or other people like you, wanting to make music with new people. Comment, like, and support different posts, and you are on your way to creating a great system of people who can help you now, or in the future.
TIP: It is really important to represent yourself well and as someone eager and friendly. Kindness goes a long way.
Sometimes as musicians, it is easy to get sidetracked with the business side of things. Making sure you’re posting online, networking with people, and working on album art, we can forget what we were here to do in the first place, play and create music! Perfecting your craft is just as important as all the other stuff. When was the last time you practiced your guitar or did some vocal warmups? Even Adele and P!nk still attend singing lessons and Jimi Hendrix never stopped learning new skills on the guitar. You are never too good to keep practicing and it pays off when you’re up there performing!
This one is probably the most important piece of advice in this article, so I want you to read this very carefully! When you are online, or at gigs and live events, we are surrounded by people that hold buckets of talent. Sometimes when we watch these people, self-doubt can creep into our heads and make us feel as though we are not good enough, or think that ‘this person has accomplished more than me’. I am here to tell you, you are good enough as you are and you are talented! When you start comparing yourself with others, you begin to lose confidence and that can be dangerous as a musician. You need to keep telling yourself you have worked hard to be where you are and everyone's journey is different. The path you are on right now is perfect for you so keep striving for greatness and you will get there!
TIP: Every heard of positive affirmations? Its basically where you look at yourself in a mirror and tell yourself something positive! As I always say, if you think positively, positive things will happen! I know it sounds a bit silly but tomorrow morning when you wake up, I want you to say these 3 things to yourself:
"I am talented. I am hard-working. I believe in myself."
(Hint: You have to believe it, to make it work!)
I hope you enjoy these tips and tricks! Implementing these 6 things into your music career will for sure help boost your music and brand! Good luck, I cant wait to see you stars shining!
